National Conference and Hospitality Show Takes on Top Event Students

With 30th April imminent, The Conference and Hospitality Show, the largest Meetings Industry exhibition outside of London, will be taking on a record number of trained students for hands on experience on the day.   Emma Cartmell and Sue Beverley, Directors of the CHS Group, are looking forward to welcoming key buyers from the business community and the hospitality industry from across the UK.

The one day event which is being held in the Centenary Pavilion at Leeds United Football Club, has recruited students from the Business School of the University of Huddersfield who are looking to gain experience and grow their portfolio ahead of starting their careers in the industry.

The Students act as ground staff supporting the CHS Event team throughout the set up and actual day of the event.  The CHS Group is keen on collaboration on a range of initiatives with academic institutions as well as national and regional businesses.  They recently announced their partnership with the respected The Meetings Show UK.  The CHS Group already enjoys an existing relationship with Leeds Metropolitan University and in addition this year they are looking forward to working with second year students from the University of Huddersfield.

Emma Cartmell of The Conference and Hospitality Show said:

“While we have become a National Show with visitors and exhibitors from across the UK and Ireland, our commitment to the region is steadfast.  We recognise that we need the extra help at our show but we also appreciate that the quality and communication skills of these students are key. They are ambassadors of the CHS Group so we take time to train and monitor their activities ahead of and during the day.  We have had a high demand for these student placements this year so with around 30 students booked in from the University of Huddersfield and Leeds Metropolitan University, they will be split into two groups.  The day does include some logistical duties, but we are keen to give them direct experience of liaising with our visitors so tasks will include guest registration, assisting with the seminars and VIP room.  We know that many of our student volunteers go on to secure positions with some of exhibitors businesses and it is great that we can support their career development in this way”

Janna Wood, Senior Lecturer in Events Management at the Business School, University of Huddersfield adds:

“Volunteering and exhibiting at the Conference and Hospitality Show 2013 will be an invaluable experience for the students.  They have already worked and volunteered on a variety of events however working on a trade event within their industry will provide real insight.  In addition to the tasks, the students have designed their own stand and will be running this on the day.  Being able to network and sell is a huge part of working in events and this experience will allow the students to build on the exercises we have done in the classroom.  I know they are very keen to establish themselves in the industry when they embark on their placement year next year and working with Conference and Hospitality Show is one of the steps to achieving their future career aspirations.”
