The Rattle Owl, York
The Rattle Owl is an independent 42 seat casual dining restaurant on Micklegate, in York.
Head Chef Vicki Younger has created a seasonal menu that draws from Yorkshire’s produce. While the daytime and evening menus differ in price and content, they are closely related and underpinned by quality and value, using the best local produce and, crucially, ensuring waste is kept to a minimum. Dishes in the evening currently include, Gloucester Old Spot pigs head terrine, burnt apple, black pudding and proper crackling (£7) and sautéed wild mushrooms, truffle egg yolk, chestnuts and puff pastry(£6.50) to start, Yorkshire venison loin, Jerusalem artichoke, brussel sprouts, pancetta and apple jus (£17) and seared fillet of stone bass sweet potato croquette, pak choi, crab and coconut veloute (£14.50) for main, and Rattle Owl Christmas, marzipan, egg nog, Eccles cake, Roman pancake, orange curd (£7.50) and bitter chocolate tart, salted caramel, lime curd, white chocolate sorbet (£8) for dessert.
Restaurant Manager and wine lover, Lucy Fotheringham, has developed a wine list that compliments the menu, introducing mostly organic and smaller producer wines. Lucy also oversees Owlet Food and Wine, a 'microshop' which stocks wine and local beers as well as great food to take away.
The restaurant opened in early October 2015 on one of York’s most beautiful streets which runs from the main Medieval gateway of Micklegate Bar to the city, over the River Ouse. It has taken two years to renovate this 17th century building, during which the remains of a Roman building were found in the basement. Left in place, the Rattle Owl now has one of York’s most interesting wine cellars. The Rattle Owl endeavours to be ‘sensibly sustainable’ this means that the team care about their suppliers, use up everything, shop local where possible with many items in the restaurant sourced from the great shops on Micklegate – or are made from reclaimed materials. They work with local businesses for flowers, photography, design work, recycle through St Nicks, with energy supplied from Ecotricity. They are also a living wage employer and all staff take a share in any profits.
